Carsten Olbrich (*1969, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. He works with analog tape decks as well as original cassettes from the DIY underground under the name of "Tape DJ Ebu”.  He expresses himself musically within both solo projects, such as "Mr. Ebu", "Herr Ebu", "King Ebu" and "Schmertz der Welten", as well as further band projects, like the electro-acoustic impro collective "Watercoloured Well" and his former bands "Die Traktor" and "Hacke Peters". With his own label "Ebus Music", which he founded in 1988, Olbrich is still active in international underground circles. His mostly german lyrics are humorous, serious, even syllabic, sometimes dadaist-minimal and deal with arsonist art, life, suicide and wanderlust. On Radio X he creates his own program called "Jet Set, die Radio Escobar”. It airs on every first Tuesday of the month from 8 to 10 p.m. and explicitly encourages the guests to participate by bringing along their own tapes.

DJ EBU

In the late 1970s, around the age of 10, I owned a cheap tape recorder that I inadvertently turned out too loud during a test recording. The resulting feedback sound on the recording changed so strangely melodic that I instantly got the idea to use it as an intro for a first, own cassette-release...

Today I continue my own music, but also got into broadcasting. On Frankfurts local radiostation RADIO X my most regular term of interest is a cultural phenomen called "Cassette Culture": People released their own music in almost small editions on cassettes and got into a non-commercial network which existed nearly worldwide.

So why not DJ'ing with tapes? You can dance or you can try to dance to many of the most rare underground-pearls which nearly nobody knows. Music from international artists with names like Dajat Inja, Sympathy Nervous, Institute Of Noise, Relative Kälte, Cheapo Card Company, Die Welttraumforscher, Solanaceae Tau, Hypnobeat or Anton Balsam.

"What I discovered was a real alternative music scene, much more alternative than Punk, Wave, Independent and later LoFi or Gothic with their "usual" commercial ways of marketing."
